DESKTOP

Desktop computers are just that - computers made to be placed on your desk.

Desktop computers can also be placed on the floor, along side your desk. In this respect the desktop computer can also be referred to as 'the tower' or 'mini-tower'.

Certain computer desks are made with a compartment specifically for the computer desktop/tower to be placed.

Setting up Your Desktop

Part of your desktop setup will include the computer desktop, monitor, keyboard, mouse. Speakers are optional since the desktop ususally will have built-in speakers.

Before you can use an appliance such as an iron, you have to plug it into an outlet - the same is true for your computer devices. The outlet on a computer is called a port.

Your devices usually are plugged in the back of the desktop where the ports are located.. Both, the ports and devices are color-coded to make it easy to locate the particular port on the back of the desktop which has the same color-code as the device.

Here is a picture of the back of my desktop:

As you can see, each port is a different shape and color. The small, round green port is for a mouse. The color of the connector at the end of the mouse is also green. This is where the mouse would be plugged.

The same would be true for the monitor, (blue) printer (pinkish) and optional speakers. (purple)

A desktop may have different color ports and devices. As long as you can match the color device with the same color port, setting up your desktop is very easy!

Upgrading Your Desktop

Say, if you have a desktop that is three years old you want a bigger hard drive so you'll have more room to store your data or you want more memory, the main components to your computer can be replaced. This is what you would call 'upgrading your computer' - changing one or more of your computer's components.

Now, depending on your needs and what you want to do, upgrading your computer doesn't have to be hard. If you becoming familiar with what is inside your computer, you can upgrade the parts yourself.

There are many computer and electronic stores that offer these services, however, read the fine print, compare prices before you decide to use their services.

If you are not comfortable doing it yourself or if you know someone, a friend or relative, ask them to help you do it. You will save time and money using them rather than taking it a store where they could charge you up to $100. Save your money!

For instance, adding more memory to a desktop would take no more than 5 minutes; you have to remove the screws from the desktop cover, then remove the cover, snap in the memory chip, place the desktop back over the computer, add the same screws in the same spots and you're done.

This same scenario applies to upgrading your laptop.
